Peter Pan Man

By J.M. Barrie

Three one-act plays celebrating Scotland's 'Son of Kirriemuir'

The Plot

In 1922, J. M. Barrie gave his inaugural speech to the students of St. Andrews University.  It was during this speech that he gave name to his alter-ego, M’Connachie.

“M’CONNACHIE IS THE UNRULY HALF OF ME, THE WRITING HALF.

HE IS THE ONE THAT WRITES THE PLAYS.”

To celebrate the works of J.M. Barrie, Theatre Broad commissioned Anne Stenhouse to write a one-act play, which gives ‘life’ to M’Connachie. For the purpose of the drama we have allowed M’Connachie to be a real person, and in pairing him with Barrie, we try to shed some light on the complexities of the man.  He was highly sensitive and sentimental, characteristics that took him from happiness to despair as he constantly sought love and admiration.

Linking the new play with two of Barrie’s one-act plays completes our programme.  Seven Women demonstrates his ability to write ‘social comedy’ and The Twelve Pound Look gives a fine example of his ‘sophisticated political satire.’
